The Ten most Dangerous Airports to Land

We all love to travel and while most of our journeys are by air we tend to enjoy that. True enough, landing and take off in a jet plane is fun experience but if you have been to one of the following airports, I am sure you beg to differ. This lists brings for you the ten most dangerous airports to land in. The reasons include the length of the air strip, the location, the winds etc. Believe me, that heavy thud when the air plane touches the ground is nothing compared to what the pilot and the passengers go through while landing on one of the following air strips.

10. PRINCESS JULIANA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, ST. MAARTEN

This is perhaps one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean. United States Airline, KLM Royal Dutch and Corsairfly are usual users of the airport. The air strip is about 7,152 feet long and was built for smaller planes to land on but it still used by 747s and A340s. The air strip is located right next to the beach, so if you are sun-bathing and tall,  make sure to not stand up. It can be very dangerous with the strong gushes of wind. Also, you need to stay clear of the engine exhaust. It can blow you away, literally.

9. TONCONTIN AIRPORT, HONDURAS

American Airlines, Aerolineas Sosa, TACA, Copa Airlines, and Islena Airlines usually land at this strip while on their way to Honduras. This is a mountainous region, so the plane is really close to the mountain tops when preparing to land but that’s not all. Right before touchdown, the pilot has to bank towards the left at a 45 degree angel in order to make it down safe and clear. A moment of hesitation can turn out to be disaster. The landing strip is a total of 6,112 feet.

8. GIBRALTAR AIRPORT, GIBRALTAR

The landing strip is only 6,000 feet long and it lies between the Mediterranean and the Bay of Gibraltar. If the pilot miscalculates while landing the only place for you to end up in is the water and upon touch down, the brakes must be pulled in full in order to stop in time otherwise the strip finishes and its curtains. Imagine all this precision landing in a really  bad weather and you will understand why Gibraltar made it to the eighth spot.

7. MADEIRA AIRPORT, FUNCHAL

The pilot needs to fly the plane directly at the mountain and then make a turn towards the right at the eleventh hour in order to line the plane up with the air strip. The air strip is 9000 feet long and back in the year 2000 it was even shorter. Most of the European airlines use this air strip. The scary part is the mountains and the timing of the turn. If the pilot is careless or loses focus for even a second, the plane will hit the mountains and I’m sure you can imagine what happens after that.

Who does not like to shop? Well this might be the wrong question to ask because men would be nodding in disagreement all over but hey, I am talking about shopping related to girlish stuff. I am saying shopping as in high-tech gadgets and equipment, all kinds of electrical hardware and stereos. I can see your ears pointing upwards guy. Well this and a lot more for women and men of all age are found in super malls all around the world. These large and modern malls contain nearly every kind of facility imaginable including luxury suites. This list compiles for the ten largest malls from around the world so that you can make an informed decision about your shopping destination people. Thank you very much!

10. SOUTH CHINA MALL

Located in Dongguan, the shopping center is the premises of more than 1,500 shops to approximately 6.5 million square meters of floor area. It has seven areas modeled on: Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Venice, Egypt, the Caribbean, and the California. Although the shopping center has opened its doors in 2005, it still suffers from a lack of retailers. Much of the retail space remains empty. One of the main reasons might be the fact that it is located in the suburbs which are not connected to the main areas through the transport system and thus no retailers.

9. GOLDEN RESOURCES SHOPPING MALL

Located close to the fourth ring road in Beijing, China, the great commercial center of China has an approximate area of 7.3 million square feet (680,000 square meters) located on six floors. It took nearly 20 months to complete construction and when done, it was more than one half times larger than THE MALL OF AMERICA which is an honor and matter of prestige for this mall.

8. CENTRAL WORLD

As the name indicates, the mighty complex which is a mall come office is owned by the Central Group of Bangkok. It is not only the largest shopping mall in China but it has the honor of being the largest in the whole of South East Asia and why not when it spreads over 800,000 square meters. This mall is ever larger than Hong Kong’s Ocean Terminal which is saying something so kudos to the designers and the construction engineers I might say. It has a total of eight stories which opened to a delighted public in 1990. Interestingly, it was initially called the World Trade Center.

7. THE SM MALL OF ASIA

This mall is spread over an area of 407,101 square meters, this is the largest mall in Philippines. Again, it is quite evident from the name that the particular mall is the property of SM Prime Holdings. This mall is also called MOA which simply stands for MAll Of Asia. The two main attractions of this mall might was well be the first ever IMAX theater of Philippines and its first ever Olympic sized ice skating rink (which actually spans over an area of 61 by 30 meters). Pretty impressive! It is under the management of a Chinese-Filipino business lord!

6. DREAM MALL

OK so now we come to second largest mall in the whole of South East Asia and proudly present Dream Mall at the sixth place on this list. It als has the honor of being Taiwan’s largest mall and for it being spread over 400,001 square meters, we do not doubt it for a second  that it surely must be. This mall opened to general public on May 12, 2007. The cutest thing about this mall might be the fact that it has its own ferris wheel which is named after the mall. Other facilities include restaurants, theaters, gym, and various other entertainment zones.

5. WEST EDMONTON MALL

This mal is located in Canada and for this particular mall I am going to move straight to the statistics because they are mighty impressive. Say for example the mall has an average of 80000 customers every day regardless of the season or the weather. The malls parking lot has the capacity for more than 20000 vehicles and has more than 800 stores. This mall provides livelihood to more than 23000 people. It is spread over an area of 350,000 square meters approximately. Best of all is the fact that the mall has its own amusement park, they initially decided to call it fantasy land but later had to change it because of patent disputes with The Walt Disney Company.

4. CEVAHIR SHOPPING CENTER

Located in Turkey and being open to general public in October 2005, it is one of the most modern shopping malls in the world with a complete entertainment unit. It is spread over an area of 348000 square meters, and has the honor of not only being the largest in Europe but the seventh largest shopping mall in the world. This was originally supposed to be a trading complex. It has nearly 48 floors and a total of three skyscrapers.  Due to many delays, the only shopping zone of this mall was completed in eight years. But never the less a dream destination for millions from around the world.

3. SM CITY NORTH EDSA

This is another one of the largest shopping malls of Philippines owned by SM Prime Holdings. It is spread over and area of 331,861 square meters and it is one of the first shopping establishments by the SM group of companies. The huge mall houses 12 theaters, a bowling alley, food court, and a garden as well. It has undergone many renovations and expansions and was opened for public in the year 1983.

2. SM MEGAMALL

Spread over an area of 331,679 square meters, it is another one of SM Prime Holdings malls with the first ever skating rinks in bridge-way. The mall has three small Meta Trade halls that can be booked for small functions and conventions. There is a bridge-way that connects the two main towers of the mal or you might want to say two buildings of the mall and the attraction lies in the several eating outlets found in that particular bridge-way.

1. BERJAYA TIME SQUARE KUALA LUMPUR SHOPPING MALL

Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur is touted to be the world’s largest single phase building covering a whooping 7.5 million square feet of space which roughly 700,000 square meters. The stats of the mall are as follows: more than 1000 retail shops, 1200 and more luxury suites, 65 restaurants, and whole of Asia’s largest theme park! It also houses Malaysia’s first ever IMAX 2D and 3D theatre. What more can one ask for right?

Top ten Explanations for the Bermuda Triangle!

I am guessing we have all heard about the Bermuda Triangle, a place where so many ships and planes have just disappeared without any sign of a fight or wreckage! No one has ever returned from a visit to the Bermuda Triangle and it remains one of the most mysterious places earth! Presenting some of the most famous explanations for what goes on at the Bermuda Triangle.

10. Leftover technology from the lost city of Atlantis

One of the very famous reasons for the happenings at the Bermuda Triangle is that perhaps at the same where the City of Atlantis used to exist! That city is not considered lost so people think that perhaps there is some connection between the weirdness of the Bermuda triangle the city that is now where to be found! Since it is a popular belief that the City of Atlantis was powered by crystals so many also believe that it is the same crystals that are at work at the triangle! Then there is also the fact that many theorists say that the highly secretive military base called Area 51 is underwater which explains the strange disappearances!

9. Time warps

I am sure you have all heard about those portals that lead a person into another time frame; things that have been referred to as a tear in the fabric of time in a lot of different movies! Well this is the reason that is presented for the Bermuda Triangle as well. As far as the statistics go more than 1000 lives have been lost, more than 50 ships and a lot more than 20 planes have paid a deathly homage to the Bermuda Triangle over the last 500 years! Some people also say that the Bermuda triangle has blue holes, which are supposedly places from where aliens travelled into the earth! The latest addition to such theories being the idea of an electronic fog that is causing the disappearances!

8. Alien abductions

As unlikely and unbelievable as this may sound, this is actually a very popular reason people and scientists all over the world give to explain what goes on at the Bermuda Triangle and why! The accidents that went on their were highlighted supremely during the year 1967 when the National Geographic reported the strange phenomenon going on around the area where the Bermuda Triangle is located! And you know how things are when such controversial things are reported, people start making up stories of alien abduction and what not! Of course people did not suggest exactly that but they did speculate that the aliens were messing with the navigation system to harm the people! Although the idea basically did not carry forward to the 1970’s but still, the initial thoughts clinged to the minds of many and the idea has served a famous movie plots as well.

7. Deliberate attacks of destruction

As with all other incidents that are blamed onto the human act of war much more than anything else, the next reason on the list is the deliberate attacks of destruction. So many people think and many a scientist have speculated that the reason so many ships and planes including Flight 99 have been destroyed is because a testing of war missiles was going on and they got hit. They somehow do not consider the facts that even if they were hit by artillery, where are the remaining pieces of the wreckage or the dead bodies!

6. Methane Gas

The sixth reason in my list of reasons explaining the strange happenings at the Bermuda triangle is touted to be methane gas. It is reported that around the area where the Bermuda triangle is located, there are vast fields of methane gas. Scientists have conducted experiments to prove that if a bubble of methane gas is large enough, it has the capability of sinking an entire ship because it decreases the density of the water. They also explained that the resultant wreckage might have floated up to the surface but almost immediately it would be swept away by the furious Gul Stream. My question, however, still remains the same, that even though the wreckage got swept away, it would have been found somewhere! It cannot be gone as in vanished can it?

5. Geomagnetic fields

Coming in at number five is the reason that perhaps the geomagnetic fields mess with the navigational system and lead the planes and ships away from the actual destination. This would have made sense because if we consider the electronic fog thing mentioned by McGregor and Gernon, it can be pretty unlucky for all on board. But then again, say the geomagnetic fields did play with the whole navigational equipment, where did the planes and ships go? They couldn’t have disappeared because North wasn’t actually north, per se?

4. Gulf stream variations

Covering an area of around 40 to 50 mile wide, the Gulf Stream can actually move at a velocity of 5.6 miles per hour, carrying with it, whatever comes in the way! So this being a reason can be accounted for but what about the planes then? They weren’t running in the water were they? Curious, very curious!.

3. Weather and rogue waves

Some people also say that the weather near the area and the famous Caribbean-Atlantic storms yield which bring on further unpredictable weather can also be a cause of the disappearances. The planes can be lost in the furious and destructive hurricanes and the ships can get entangled in the rogue waves which can be as high as 80 feet. Plausible yet with loop holes as this cannot have been the case with all of them!

2. Human Error

Then we come to the most famous excuse of all which is human error. Where I completely believe that to err is human, but to put my curiosity to rest on the mere conclusion that the planes disappeared due to bad pilots and ships sunk due to drunken sailors. I think that is too much of a coincidence for so many deaths.

1. Sheer myth

The only explanation that would satisfy me is this last reason which is no reason at all. I think we should just admit that there is no plausible explanation for what goes on at the Bermuda Triangle and we should let the future generations figure it out. Now who wants more pizza?
