I am going to be honest here and say that I absolutely hate anything
and everything that has anything to do with biology or medical science.
But that does not stop the medical world from being fascinating at
times. That world is full of weird diseases that you probably aren’t
even aware of, different medical marvels and weird anomalies. This
article discusses top ten tales from the medical world which are really
bizarre. Each story is interesting in its own way and some are very,
VERY difficult for the human mind to comprehend.
10. MAN WITH VULCAN BLOOD
You guys know Star Trek right? Do you remember Mr. Spock with
greenish blood? Well, apparently that can occur in humans as well. In
October 2005, doctors at a hospital in Vancouver were inserting arterial
line into a patient in order to relieve pressure in his legs. The
doctors were startled when they saw ‘green’ blood instead of the usual
red blood. Initially the doctors thought that it’s because the
hemoglobin did not bind with the oxygen in the blood. But it later
turned out to be because of a condition where hydrogen sulfide combines
with the ferric ions in the blood to form sulfhemoglobin, which then
turns the blood green.
9. TWO DNAS
Karen Keegan is a woman with two different sets of DNA. One day she
required a kidney transplant. She had three sons and all three were
tested to see if their organ was compatible. Two of her sons did not
match Keegan’s DNA structure. That’s because the mother had two
different sets of DNA. The DNA that matched with the other two sons was
found in Keegan’s thyroid gland. This one was weird.
8. NATALIE ADLER
Natalie is young woman from Melbourne, Australia. She suffers from a
disorder that renders her blind every three days out of six. Her eyes
just close down and she can’t open them before three days. This whole
phenomenon started when was eleven years old. Initially, the ‘shut-down’
of the eyes occurred randomly but soon enough the procedure started
following a cycle. No cause for this disorder has been found out yet and
therefore, no cure has come out.
7. PENCIL IN THE HEAD
Margaret Wegner suffered from a lot of headaches and nosebleed for
fifty-five years. She finally opted for surgery in August 2007. The
surgery was conducted to remove a 3 inch pencil that stuck in her head
in an accident when she was four years old. She couldn’t have the
surgery back then because of the lack of technology. It was also feared
that the doctors might cause some irreversible damage. So her parents
decided to wait she waited for five whole decades. The doctors performed
a successful operation on her and now the headaches and nosebleed are
gone.
6. GIRL WITH NONSTOP LAUGHTER
Xu Pinghui is a 12 year old girl from Chongqing. She developed a
fever when she was eight months old and that led her to laugh
continuously and uncontrollably ever since. This particular phenomenon
is the reason that she lost her ability to speak when she was two years
old. She can only communicate through giggling. It is still not known
why this weird disease was caused. Even calling it a disease is actually
weird. The doctors believe that it might be because of the damage
caused to her frontal lobe.
5. IMPALED WITH A FAUCET
Yi Zhoa from Chongqing (China) was 57 years old. He accidentally
impaled his eye socket with a bathroom faucet. He was rushed to the
emergency room and because of the faucet it was impossible to do a CT
scan. A plumber was called to remove the pipe out of his socket. That
did not work out so well so Zhoa took the matters into his own hands. Of
course he was guided by doctors. Miraculous though it may sound, the
eye received very little damage, the brain received no damage and the
facial bones suffered fractures.
4. 100 DEATHS
Jim McClatchey was 54 years old and lived in Atlanta, Georgia. His
wife found him unconscious in the house and so he was rushed to the
hospital. He was struck by an unknown virus which is why his heart kept
going into a cardiac arrest even when he was given a hundred electric
shocks. In the first hour of this treatment, the heart stopped fifty
times. Jim suffered second-degree burns on his chest of these electric
shocks. He was able to survive all of this and was sent back to work in
no time. Unlike the cats that have nine lives, this lucky bloke had
hundred.
3. HEART RECIPIENT
William Sheridan from New York was 63 years old and he was recovering
from a recent heart transplant surgery. He suddenly developed this
great passion for art and would draw beautiful sketches. The organ with
which he was provided with belonged to an artist. This phenomenon is
called cellular memory. It is just a theory but it is said that a brain
is not the only part with memory and that other parts also contain
memory. Sometimes, the person implanted with an organ tends to behave
the way the organ donor did because of this very phenomenon.
2. EIGHT-LIMBED GIRL
This girl was born in Bihar (India) in 2005. Her name is Lakshmi
Tatma. She was born with eight limbs. Her headless twin’s body was
joined with her at the pelvis thus resulting in four arms and four legs.
She was named after the Goddess Lakshmi because the Goddess herself has
many arms. This condition is known as isciopagus. Interestingly enough,
Lakshmi also has two spines, four kidneys, two stomachs and two chest
cavities.
1. MIRACLE WALKER
Chenoweth has spent the last ten years in a wheelchair. He was born
with a disease that left him unable to walk so he consulted his doctor
about taking lessons for scuba diving in 1998. The doctor forbade him to
do so but he went on with it anyway. He dove to a depth of 55 feet upon
setting foot on land again he found that he was able to walk. But soon
he was unable to stop walking so he went underwater again. This time he
was able to walk longer before losing control over his legs. Soon he
discovered that the deeper he dove, the more he could walk. So in other
words, deep diving was the fuel for his legs. Beat that.
